LUQ LTER DATA SETS DOCUMENTATION FORM
ON-LINE VERSION
A DATA SET is a series of observations collected by the same methodology. Each data set should have documentation sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the research to replicate the study. Data sets may be broken into subsets (data files) that are discrete in space and time, in that order. The documentation for a data set should include all spatial and temporal subdivisions of the data.

PROJECT TITLE: LUQ LTER Information Management and Remote Sensing Local School Outreach Project (Community Composition of Plants)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: One of the main components of the LTER Program is the interaction of the scientists with the community's schools and community in general. LUQ LTER Information Management understands that this component of the LTER Program ultimately represents its most important characteristic. As part of that community we have the opportunity to participate as individuals in different activities which are ecologically and educationally driven. If these activities fit with LTER's core goals of preserving nature and sharing data, information, and knowledge with the rest of the community and future generations, it should be taken as an opportunity to both serve your community's needs and the goals of our LTER program. This was the motivation for this project and we expect to continue it for the years to come, if time and resources permit.

We define a data file as a component of a data set. A data set can have
only one data file or more. Basically, different data files have different data
structures or format.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: In Septemeber 9, 2002, a total of eighty three (83) trees were identified (all there are) regardless of their height and/or diameter. At that moment alluminium tags where prepared (numbered as 001 to 083) and carefully and safely located on the trees. All students, teachers, and some parents took part in this activity. All students and teachers were taking notes as the trees were identified by the agronomist by their common name. Several activities involving the LUQ LTER Information Management Staff and the Institute for Tropical Ecological Studies (ITES) from the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras (UPR) followed this originating activity. In November 22, 2002, the GPS coordanates and the diameters of the identified trees were recorded. The data files contain the the tag numbers assigned, the common as well as the scientific names as identified by the agronomist, and the origin of the species whenever it was available.
DATA SET METHODS: The species were identified at the field by the agronomist Nancy Laboy, from the Jardín Botánico at Caguas. A single leaf sample from some of the species were taken for further identification. The GPS coordinates were taken by Professor John Thomlinson, from ITES, UPR using a Trimble Pro XR GPS. Diameters where measured at 130 cm on the "Main stem" whenever possible, otherwise the height of measurement is specified in the "Comments" column of the data base. In most cases the "main stem" is the one on which the tag had been attached to. Some tags had fallen down and trees where identified by the location on the field map. In all cases the tree's was properly identified. Species names where searched for by their common name in Little et. al. When the common name was found exactly, the corresponding species name was annotated in the database otherwise a "?" was entered. In cases where more than one species was found with the same common name, the first one listed was selected with a "?" at the end.

SITES DESCRIPTIONS:
The Colegio Creativo de Puerto Rico is a private elementary school located at
the PR State Road No. 847 Km 1.2 (Calle Guadacanal) of Río Piedras, Puerto
Rico at approximately 98 meters of elevation. The original soil was perturbed
in 1993, when the structure, called "el Castillo" due to its castle-like
structure, was re-modeled and a new baseball court was built on the east side
of the schoolyard. The soil seems to be mostly stoney and of yellow to orange
color. Immediately after inaugurization of the new facilities in 1994, trees
were planted in the sorroundings of the main structure
