LUQ LTER DATA SETS DOCUMENTATION FORM

ON-LINE VERSION

A DATA SET is a series of observations collected by the same methodology. Each data set should have documentation sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the research to replicate the study. Data sets may be broken into subsets (data files) that are discrete in space and time, in that order. The documentation for a data set should include all spatial and temporal subdivisions of the data.

DATA SET IDENTIFIER :  Heliconia collection data

PROJECT TITLE :   Invertebrate diversity in Heliconia flower bracts at El Verde (Heliconia flower bracts invertebrate diversity in the LEF)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION : This study complemented the work on bromeliad microcosms. It was carried out to compare the abundance and diversity of the invertebrate fauna supported by the accumulated fluid and organic matter in Heliconia bracts with that of the aquatic component of the bromeliad microcosm.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: Collection details of Heliconia plants sampled.

DATA SET METHODS:  Bracts of plants selected for collection were numbered; fluid from each bract was pipetted into a separate bottle at the sampling site. Each individual bract was then cut from the inflorescence and placed in a bag, together with its respective fluid sample bottle. In the laboratory, fluid amount was measured. Bracts were dissected individually and all organisms recovered by washing and brushing with water from the individual floral components and, with organisms from the bract fluid, preserved for counting and identification.
