LUQ LTER DATA SETS DOCUMENTATION FORM

ON-LINE VERSION

A DATA SET is a series of observations collected by the same methodology. Each data set should have documentation sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the research to replicate the study. Data sets may be broken into subsets (data files) that are discrete in space and time, in that order. The documentation for a data set should include all spatial and temporal subdivisions of the data.

DATA SET IDENTIFIER: Cecropia growth at El Verde gaps

PROJECT TITLE: Revegetation, Transplants and Fertilization (Disturbance Regime)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The goal of this project was to locate and characterize the sites where Cecropia schreberiana saplings and seedlings occur.  I made a one-time survey of about 35 ha of tabonuco forest near El Verde Research Station, in 1989 before Hurricane Hugo.  What little Cecropia regeneration I found was in tree fall gaps, or in open areas along streams.

We define a data file as a component of a data set. A data set can have only one data file or more. Basically, different data files have different data structures or format.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: While doing the survey of gaps at El Verde the number and height of Cecropia saplings found in gaps where recorded. Since this species is mostly restricted to gaps, an estimate of the total population of Cecropia in the regeneration size classes in the forest can be obtained. (There are others along the edges of the Sonadora and Prieta.) The abundance, dispersion, and size class distribution of the Cecropia population is an index of disturbance in tabonuco forest and make an interesting study in its own right.

DATA SET METHODS: All cecropia encountered were measured as to height.
