LUQ LTER DATA SETS DOCUMENTATION FORM
ON-LINE VERSION
A DATA SET is a series of observations collected by the same methodology. Each data set should have documentation sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the research to replicate the study. Data sets may be broken into subsets (data files) that are discrete in space and time, in that order. The documentation for a data set should include all spatial and temporal subdivisions of the data.

DATA SET IDENTIFIER: Bisley Grid Habitat data 1994, 1999
PROJECT TITLE: Community Ecology of Land Snails (Long-term population dynamics of snails in the Tabonuco forest)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Terrestrial gastropods and walking sticks were sampled at 36-40 points on the grid at the Bisley Watersheds to investigate long-term population and community dynamics and response to disturbance.
Densities
Densities of invertebrates and apparency of plant species are estimated to investigate the effects of disturbance on long-term population dynamics, habitat associations, and spatial distributions.
Habitat
To investigate habitat associations of terrestrial invertebrates, apparency of 17 plant groups (species, genera, families) from 0-3 m from the ground was estimated at 36 points on the grid at Bisley Watersheds 1 and 2 in 1994 and 1999.

We define a data file as a component of a data set. A data set can have
only one data file or more. Basically, different data files have different data
structures or format.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: The data set consists of one file containing data from the summers of 1994 and 1999. Various habitat characteristics are presented, as well as the apparency of common plant taxa at 7 heights (every 0.5 m from ground level to 3 m). However, the data for some plant species were not divided by height in 1994; only total apparency of those species is available for that year.
DATA SET METHODS: Ranked variables (Rock Cover,
Litter Cover, Dead Wood Cover, Vine Cover) assume one of five states depending
on the relative amount of cover (1 = 0-20%, 2 = 21-40%, 3 = 41-60%, 4 = 61-80%,
5 = 81-100%). Canopy openness was evaluated using a spherical densiometer positioned
0.5 m away from the point in each of the cardinal directions. The average of
these four readings can be considered a description of canopy openness. A nail
was driven into the forest floor 1 m from the point in each of the cardinal
directions, the number of leaves obtained thus is used as an estimate of litter
cover. Plant apparency (Cook and Stubbendieck 1986) for common species was also
recorded. The number of foliar intercepts, defined as a species-specific count
of vegetation touching a wooden dowel, was counted at each of 7 heights (0,
0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 m) using a plant apparency device (Cary 1992,
Secrest 1995). Four 0.5-m dowels were positioned at 90-degree angles at each
height. The device was positioned 1.5 m from the central point in each cardinal
direction, and the number of intercepts recorded.

SITES DESCRIPTIONS: This study was conducted in two of the Bisley Experimental Watersheds of the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) of Puerto Rico. The Luquillo mountains (18° 20'N, 65° 49'W) are the predominant physiographic feature in northeastern Puerto Rico and are from sea level to an elevation of 1075 m over a distance of approximately 10 km. The Bisley watersheds 1 and 2 are on the windward side of the mountains, have a mean annual precipitation of approximately 3500 mm, and occur in the subtropical forest life zone (Scatena, 1989). These adjacent watersheds drain a total of 13 highly dissected hectares that are underlain by a Cretaceous age volcanoclastic oldstone of andesitic composition.
