LUQ LTER DATA SETS DOCUMENTATION FORM
ON-LINE VERSION
A DATA SET is a series of observations collected by the same methodology. Each data set should have documentation sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the research to replicate the study. Data sets may be broken into subsets (data files) that are discrete in space and time, in that order. The documentation for a data set should include all spatial and temporal subdivisions of the data.

DATA SET IDENTIFIER: Frog population plots (El Verde + Bisley)(Long-term plot data on Eleutherodactylus coquí)
PROJECT TITLE: Frog Population Dynamics
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: El Verde Station, located in the tabonuco forest zone on the NW side of the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF), has hosted numerous scientific efforts since the 1960s. Thus, a great deal of information exists concerning anuran populations at the site over the past 30 years. Although past surveys did not use consistent techniques, they clearly document the general status of the anuran community of the area. I began working at El Verde in the 1970s and have collected data on the anuran community primarily in the 1980s and 1990s. Until recently, these surveys also lacked a consistent sampling protocol, although they clearly document declines in species richness in comparison to earlier records.
Most Puerto Rican Eleutherodactylus are terrestrial frogs that breed for prolonged periods of time in more or less continuous habitat. Because their life cycle lacks a free living larvae stage, reproductive behavior is not tied to bodies of water and they do not have the large aggregations typical of many aquatic breeders. For these reasons, assessing their population status requires examining fairly large areas of habitat. I began systematically sampling the anuran community on a 12 ha grid at the Bisley watersheds in 1989 and a second 16 ha grid at El Verde in 1993. These efforts have provided a comprehensive data set that can be used to evaluate future changes in the anuran community in this forest.

We define a data file as
a component of a data set. A data set can have only one data file or more. Basically,
different data files have different data structures or format.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: Long-term population patterns of coquies likely result from a variety of influences. Key among these are moisture, the physical habitat as affected by succession and disturbances of various scales, and predator population. Here, I present data on each of these factors along with a nine-year record of population numbers of coquies in four long-term study plots in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) of northeastern Puerto Rico.
DATA SET METHODS: Mark-multiple-recapture. Frogs were located visually between 2000 - 0200 h using headlamps. Adults (≥25 mm) were captured and measured to 0.5 mm with dial calipers. Each was permanently marked by clipping a unique combination of toes. Sex and reproduction condition were noted.

SITES DESCRIPTIONS:
Sonadora West Old Plot: From the little footbridge just before the main
swinging bridge over Sonadora, follow the ravine to the west and south upslope
~50 m. The plot is 20X20 on a more or less flat sierra palm area spanning the
revine. It is marked by green metal stakes and small silver stakes.
Sonadora West New Plot: From the Sonadora West Old Plot, go 5 m West upslope from the ravine into a mature tabonuca stand. The plot measures 20 X 20 m and is marked by green metal stakes and small silver metal stakes.
Bisley Stream 2 Plot: From the dirt road at the Bisley watersheds, go up stream 2 about 100 m to the point at which the vergetation transect crosses the stream. The plot is 20 X 20 m with white plastic pipes in the ground at the corners. It is on an old landslide area.
Bisley Forest Control Plot: From the parking area between Bisley watershed 2 and 3, follow the main trail to the smithonian plot about 4 m. The plot is visible from the trail. It is 20 X 20 m with white plastic pipes marking the corners.
