Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP) Liana Data
Summary

Short name:

LUQMetadata192

Data set ID:

192

Abstract:

Liana demographic data from the 16-Ha Big Grid (LFDP) over time: These data contain liana and tree data for two demographic censuses (summer 2001 and summer 2015) from 20 randomly selected quadrats within the LFDP (10 in the northern LFDP -cover classes 1-3 sensu Thompson et al. 2002) and 10 in the southern LFDP (cover class 4 sensu Thompson et al. 2002).

Methodology

Methods:

Lianas were measured in the 16-Ha Big Grid (LFDP) in 2000 and 2015, during the summer, as part of the El Verde REU program. 10 quadrats from each land use area [20 in total] (the northern LFDP high-intensity land use, and the southern LFDP low-intensity land use are) were censued for lianas. All woody vines, rooted in the soil, were measured for diameter at at 130cm above the ground. Trees within the selected quadrats were also censused, measuring diameter at 130 cm above the ground and the degree of tree crown infestation by lianas. The degree of tree crown infestation by lianas was assessed as to belonging to one of 5 canopy coverage classes (0, 1–25, 26–50, 51–75, 76–100%). Data collection was modified from Clark & Clark 1990 - Distribution and effects on tree growth of lianas and woody hemiepiphytes in a Costa Rican Tropical wet forest - Journal of Tropical Ecology 6:321-331. See methods in Rice et al. (2001) and Hogan et al. (2016) for further details.
