I left NSF in mid-January 2006, and assumed the position of Director for the Center for Environmental Science and Engineering at UConn. Among other things, the Center includes state-of-the-art Analytical Laboratories for environmental analyses of inorganics, organics, and metals. Plus, UConn offers many excellent colleagues who study tropical ecology!
Chris Bloch, one of my doctoral students who is currently a post-doctoral fellow working on LTER-related research, has accepted a faculty position at Bridgewater State University in MA.
Michael Cramer, one of my MS students, successfully defended his dissertation at the University of Cincinnati.
Steven Presley, one of my doctoral students, moved to UConn as well, where he is a post-doctoral associate.
Michael Gannon, one of my doctoral students, was promoted to the position of Dean at his home institution, The Pennsylvania State University - Altoona Campus.

The Luquillo Mountains UNESCO HELP Project held its second water dialogue under the theme "Water and Land Use in the Luquillo Mountains". The meeting was co-sponsored by the Municipality of Rio Grande and held in the Villa Pesquera located it the Espiritu Santo Estuarine Reserve in Rio Grande. The meeting was attended by about 30 representatives of the local communities, federal, state and municipal governments, universities, and non-governmental organizations.
The group was greeted by the Major of Rio Grande, Mr. Eduard Rivera Correa.
During the morning, five talks were presented on water and land-use related
topics. In the afternoon, a workshop was held to discuss environmental concerns,
identify common problems and to establish
scientific information needs. The meeting ended with a trip to the Rio Espiritu
Santo Estuary on fisherman boats. For more information on the Luquillo UNESCO

My book has been accepted for publication by Springer-Verlag. It is entitled "Post-agricultural succession in the Neotropics" and includes several people from the Luquillo LTER. I will be the sole editor and also write the introductory and concluding chapters.
From Matt Larsen
New USGS report:
"Water, Sediment, and Nutrient Discharge Characteristics of Rivers in Puerto Rico, and their Potential Influence on Coral Reefs". This report, just released, characterizes water, sediment, and nutrient discharge from Puerto Rico rivers. It is available on-line only, and can be downloaded at http://pubs.water.usgs.gov/sir2005-5206/ . Please contact Matt if you would like additional information.
Steven McGee, Nick Brokaw, and Jorge Ortiz collaborated to develop a $1.5 million grant proposal to the Instructional Materials Develop program. It will be an extension to the Journey to El Yunque project. One outcome, if funded, would be hiring a full-time educational coordinator for the schoolyard program.
Steven McGee, Jorge Ortiz, Carlos Dominguez, and Elliot Lopez are planning a 3-day ecology camp for students new in the schoolyard program. We are currently targeting labor weekend.
